Shoji Toyama

Director / Writer

Born in 1984 in Kumamoto Prefecture. Graduate of Hosei University and Waseda University Graduate School of Global Information and Telecommunication Studies, and also studied at Boston University. Directed his first dramatic feature film “Our Night is Not Long” in 2012. It received a theatrical release in 2012, and was also screened to acclaim at the 2012 Tokyo International Film Festival. His second feature film “Magic Utopia” received the Special Jury Remi Award in the Main Competition at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival 2016. His short film “Winter`s Butterfly”, won The Best Asian Film Award at the Teheran International Short Film Festival 2016. Toyama has been energetically making films as well as planning and producing exhibitions and art projects, and works as the director of Saitama Triennale 2020. His latest feature film “The River Breathes” was completed in 2022.
